Feb 11 Abel Tasman National Park

This morning we drove from Motueka to Marahau at the entrance to Abel Tasman National Park. Went to the Aqua Taxi base where we were loaded onto the boat while it was on the trailer. Got on the water and made our way to Totaranui seeing beautiful beaches and seals along the way. We had decided that the way to see the most was to go by boat up the coast and walk back from Totaranui beach. We started hiking southward at 11 or so, and got to Awaroa crossing around 1 p.m. where we changed into sandals and flipflops. After waiting for a while for the tide to go out, we started across and got only a little wet. People were watching and waiting to see if we made it. Made it to Bark Bay around 6 with rain for the last hour. The crossing at Onetahuti was very short; we took about 6 steps on rocks and that was it. At Bark Bay hut we got the last two bunks together on the lower level; there were 8 mattress pads on the lower level, and 7 up top in our room. There was a second room laid out the same way, plus one smaller room.

The pictures show the water taxi, just before loading, and how people are unloaded from it on the beaches.

We saw many really scenic beaches with relatively few people on them.

Susie's favourite plant was the tree fern because of its beautiful large fronds.
